A few weeks ago some of us Coventry Bloggers were invited to attend the press night for the new MOD Pizza Coventry opening. MOD stands for Made On Demand so it does exactly what it says on the tin! MOD Pizza was founded in 2008 by husband and wife, Scott and Ally Svenson, in their hometown of Seattle. They started to wonder if there was a better way to do pizza where everyone could get exactly what they wanted for as little as possible and the employees could be paid as much as possible and be given more opportunities for growth. And so MOD Pizza was born and the first one opened in Downtown Seattle. Since then they have branched out all over the US and come to UK shores too.
The idea of the place is great. Me and a few others have said the best way to describe it is as Subway for pizza! You queue up and then pick your base. You can choose from thick to thin and even gluten free, which is amazing that they offer that too (although it is an extra £2)! Then you pick your sauce and cheese (they do vegan cheese guys!) and then onto the toppings. They had a huge meat area with all sorts of chicken, beef, pepperoni, etc but if you’re a vegetarian, like me, there is also a huge variety of veggies to choose from. I chose red onion, mushrooms, green pepper and jalapenos on a thick crust with tomato sauce and cheese and it was gorgeous. They do also have a few set pizzas on the menu that you can choose from if you didn’t want to make your own. I also ordered a side of garlic bread which came with a choice of dip and was absolutely delicious – you must try the pesto dip, it’s to die for! If you go with friends then it’s a good idea to order a different side each and share – that way you can try all the sides on offer!
Once you’ve ordered and paid you then sit down with a buzzer and wait for it to be cooked. I was pretty impressed with the speed that it cooks and we didn’t have to wait long at all. However, one of our party did have an issue with her pizza. After we had all received ours, she was still waiting and when she enquired as to where it was she was informed that they had actually dropped it! Luckily she had picked a ready made option off the menu so they redid it for her, however we did wonder how they would of redone it if she had picked specific topics like us others did. The server was super nice about it all and handled it fantastically for her though. Also me and another blogger ended up with each others order sheet underneath our pizzas, so her pizza came out under my name and I had to wait for her name to be called for mine. It wasn’t a huge deal as we were in the same party, but just something to keep in mind. MOD Pizza was really busy on the night and it was the first time they had opened I believe, so I’m sure that this was probably a one off due to high demand.
Anyway onto the actual food. It was AMAZING! One of the best restaurant pizzas I’ve ever had! I chose the thick crust and it was really doughy. The veggies were super fresh and tasty and it was cooked to perfection – the cheese was melted just enough and the crust was just crisping. I was super impressed and it’s the most flavoursome pizza I’ve had in a long time. The garlic bread was also really nice and the selection of dips was also good. They offer a variety of soft drinks, including real lemonade and they even do milkshakes! They also serve alcohol too, so this would be a great place to start a night out with friends before carrying on to some of the local bars. With all the delicious sides, I couldn’t finish all the pizza and ended up taking half of it home.
All of the bloggers that went were also very impressed with MOD Pizza and I’ve seen nothing but rave reviews on blogs and social media since the opening. Whether you’re looking for a family lunch or an evening with friends, it’s great for all occasions. At only £9.97 for the 11” thick crust, the prices are really reasonable. You can also get smaller pizzas that are even cheaper and the sides are all around £3 each. They also do decadent desserts too if you have a sweet tooth! MOD Pizza is situated in Cathedral Lanes, making it the perfect central location for most of Coventry. Next time you’re in the area make sure you check it out. There are MOD Pizzas dotted all over the UK and you can find your nearest store on their website.
