Like There’s No Tomorrow: Coventry’s Young actors take to the stage to combat climate change

Coventry has yet another exciting opportunity arising, as the talented young performers of Belgrade Theatre have the opportunity to perform in an original play, commissioned through National Theatre’s NT Connections project. Bringing together many brilliant writers, the NT Connections project will give the theatre makers of tomorrow the chance to star in ten commissioned plays, working with 300 youth groups and over 6000 young people.

With climate change being a more relevant topic than ever, Belgrade Theatre’s talented young performers have taken inspiration from Climate Activists to create Like There’s No Tomorrow, alongside Belgrade’s Young Company with the support of expert theatre practitioners. NT Connections project not only gives young people the opportunity to act, but to tell the stories that are important to them.

Like There’s No Tomorrow will be showing 9-14 March on Belgrade’s brilliant B2 stage, addressing climate crisis concerns, following the story of a teenage girl, Maru. Having worked hard for their money, Maru’s parents have earned their right to little comforts: the latest mobile, a second car, a new party dress. Yet Maru cannot focus with the pollution so bad that she can hardly breathe and no one else seems to be seeing the connection. To make matters even worse, the newly elected mayor is planning to build on the park she always visited as a child. And to top it all off, a mysterious cracks splits through the town and she decides enough is enough, somebody needs to take notice and Maru will be the one to take the lead.

Following the performance of Like There’s No Tomorrow, the final script will be submitted in May to the National theatre, which hopefully will be selected to be performed at NT Connections in 2021.
The young people of Coventry are truly inspirational and we wish the best of luck to them!
