Eat Out to Help Out: 10 independent Coventry restaurants taking part

  • Turmeric Gold

166 Spon Street, CV1 3BB

I dined at Turmeric Gold just last week, and it was simply amazing. Turmeric Gold specialise in Indian and South Asian cuisine, but they are more than just your average Indian restaurant. Their attention to detail is spectacular and they really go the extra mile to make their guests feel special. I would recommend the Chef’s Khazana – a starter platter containing a selection of Indian bites, including sheek kebab, onion bhaji and chicken tikka.

Turmeric Gold are open Monday & Wednesday from 5pm until 10pm, and from 5pm until 9pm on Tuesdays.

  • The Green Dragon

21 Spon Street, CV1 3BA

The Green Dragon haven’t had the best of luck so far, with the restaurant launching a matter of days before the country went into lockdown, and so it is nice to see them back with a bang. Despite the name creating implications of east Asian cuisine, The Green Dragon offer the “best of British” and are all about using local produce and supporting independent suppliers – even the alcohol is all British, as I found when I tried to order a glass of Pinot Grigio! During August, The Green Dragon are offering a three-course set menu for £20… but guess what?! You only pay £10!

The Green Dragon do not open on Mondays but are open Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 9am until late.

  • The Artisan Bar & Grill

1-3 Ryley Street, CV1 4AJ

Set in a former watchmaker’s workshop with glorious high beams and exposed brickwork, The Artisan Bar & Grill is a firm favourite amongst Coventry residents and visitors alike. The restaurant offers a small selection of different food options, but their real speciality is steak – in sandwiches at lunchtime or served with Bloody Mary butter and all the trimmings in the evening.

Find the full menu here: https://www.theartisanbarandgrill.co.uk/menus

The Artisan Bar & Grill open for lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 12pm and 4pm, and for dinner from 4pm until 11pm.

  • The Yard

11-12 Bull Yard, CV1 1LH

The Yard is Coventry’s flagship LGBTQ+ venue; although primarily a bar and club, The Yard also serve food options such as the “You Dirty Cow” beef burger, “Pull Ya Pork” hot dog and  “Meatball Al-horno” spicy tomato meatballs… as well as loaded fries, nachos, sharing boxes and much more!

The Yard are open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am until 11pm.

  • Playwrights Bar & Bistro

4-6 Hay Lane, CV1 5RF

Situated in the Cathedral Quarters just a stone’s throw from the cathedral ruins, Playwrights pride themselves on their ability to cater to all guests, whatever their dietary requirements. I have a lot of meat-free friends and I know the struggles of finding a restaurant which has ‘something for everyone’, beyond your bog-standard bean burger. Not only do Playwrights offer extensive choice for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diners, the options available sound absolutely delicious, and meat-eaters don’t have to miss out either!

Playwrights are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays, from 10am until 9pm.

  • Leave It to Esmie

Unit 13a, Fargo Village, Far Gosford Street, CV1 5ED

Situated in Fargo Village, Leave It to Esmie is a family-run restaurant serving up authentic Caribbean cuisine – they’re also often included in the local line-up for Digbeth Dining Club. Think jerk chicken, mutton curry and tonnes and tonnes of flavour!

Find the menu here (collection menu only, to give you an idea of what’s on offer): https://www.esmies.co.uk/online-ordering

Leave It to Esmie are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays but are open on Wednesdays from 5pm until 9:30pm.

  • Basement Browns

14 High Street, CV1 5RE

With branches in Coventry and Leamington Spa, Basement Browns offer delicious, fresh pizzas with a large variety of different toppings. My favourite thing about Basement Browns pizza is that you can add as many different vegetable toppings as you want for free. Not only that, but the sides are out of this world – order the chicken crunchies and the cheesy garlic bread… you won’t regret it! With vegan and gluten-free options available, there really is something for everyone.

Basement Browns are open Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 5pm until 10pm.

  • Rodizio Rico

16 Corporation Street, CV1 1GF

Boasting the title of the UK’s first Churrascaria, Rodizio Rico offer a unique dining experience based on the traditional steakhouses of Brazil. Whilst diners’ tuck into an all-you-can-eat buffet of Brazilian side dishes and salad options, ‘Passadors’ (carving waiters) pass from table to table offering an extensive selection of grilled meats, sliced straight from their skewers onto your plates. Not for the faint hearted!

Rodizio Rico are open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9am until 5pm.

  • Aqua Food & Mood

14a Butts, CV1 3GR

With restaurants in Coventry and Warwick, Aqua Food & Mood specialise in Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisine. The restaurant offers a selection of traditional dishes including hot and cold mezze, barbequed meats and – my favourite – chicken/lamb shawarma. Aqua also offer a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options and have an in-house Shisha lounge for after dinner!
