The Nook: Long-Covid Breath and Yoga Workshop

The Nook Urban Retreat, a dedicated yoga and art studio in Coventry city centre, is organising a special workshop for those who have been unfortunate enough to suffer from Covid. Their ‘Long-Covid – Breath + Yoga Workshop’ will be held on Saturday 29 May 2021 from 10am to 12:30pm in their Studio on Upper Precinct.

This will be first yoga workshop dedicated to helping Covid sufferers in the Midlands and Warwickshire region, and one of only a handful in the country.

The Nook have previously hosted a series of successful yoga workshops last year and for their first workshop back after re-opening on May 17, they are prioritising those who have suffered from Covid and are living with its long term effects on the body; typically some of these effects are breathlessness, fatigue and the inability to physically be at the same level as pre-Covid.

Michelle, The Nook’s founder says “There have been many published articles citing how yoga and breathing techniques are able to provide relief to Covid sufferers, and as a yoga studio we want to step in and help. This is why we have made this our priority and this workshop is the first one we are hosting coming out of lockdown.”

The workshop will be led by experienced instructor Meryl Winby, who herself has suffered from Covid. Having experienced Covid first hand as well as the longer term effects on the body and breath, Meryl will incorporate slow flow yoga sequences along with breathing exercises to offer the body a route to return and maintain exercise and movement.

Anyone can benefit from deep breathing techniques, but they play an especially important role in the Covid recovery process. Deep breathing exercises can help restore diaphragm function and increase lung capacity, building up the ability to breathe deeply during any activity, not just while at rest. Breathing exercises can also lessen feelings of anxiety and stress, which are often present in people who have experienced Covid.

Whilst the workshop is aimed at Covid sufferers, anyone can join the workshop even if they have had not had Covid. The workshop is especially useful for anyone looking for a slower, more restorative yoga practice along with learning breathing techniques.

The Long-Covid – Breath + Yoga Workshop is £30 and is limited to just 9 people. If there is demand, The Nook has plans to organise further sessions to accommodate more people wanting to experience the workshop.
